Course Description

Higher Education Administration will engage students to critically examine the theories, policies, and procedures involved in administering higher education institutions. Students will be exposed to the distinguish features between leadership and management and examine the knowledge and skills needed to address higher education administrative challenges.

This course will revolve around theory and practice as it relates to the development of higher education professionals. The course will trace higher education from its historical perspective through contemporary issues in organization, administration and governance. The design of the course will include lectures, discussions, presentations and interactive case narratives.

Topics include governance, accreditation, institutional research, finance, facilities, fundraising, human resources, student life, recruitment and retention, leadership, and future trends. Students are expected to leave the course with an understanding of the overarching issues facing the leadership and administration of colleges and universities in the global perspective.

Advanced Education: Theory, Practice and Purpose

Course Description

This course introduces students to critical thinking and scholarly writing to develop their pre-requisite skills for graduate programmes and professional practice. It further provides opportunities for students to acquire and practice skills necessary to succeed in online learning. Consistent with the focus of Schools on the scholar-practitioner model, students will also critically examine and apply relevant educational theory to their practice. Finally, the course provides students with the ability to articulate and examine their professional purpose and how it aligns with their chosen degree program and professional career aspirations.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate emerging practices in relation to theories and concepts
  • Explore the elements of good teaching.
  • Expand their knowledge and understanding in the area of Teaching and Learning through learning, based on critical engagement with current Education theory, research, policy and practice.
  • Demonstrate appropriate levels of critical analysis, reflection and contextual awareness in relation to the field of teaching and learning in education
